Vallon-Pont-d'Arc

The city is located at the gates of one of the most beautiful tourist sites in France: Les Ardèche gorges.

The famous Pont d'Arc, a natural arch more than 30 meters high dug by the Ardèche river and classified as a Grand Site de France, gave it its name.

Vallon Pont d'Arc is also a center of prehistory and cultural tourism. 


It is a small village of about 2000 inhabitants in winter, which sees its population increase tenfold in summer. 


Son Hotel de Ville, a castle built in 1639 under Louis XIII, houses seven Aubusson tapestries depicting the Crusades, exhibited in the hall of honor.

Since the discovery in 1994, of the decorated cave named Chauvet Pont d'Arc cave  named after its inventor, and which contains many cave paintings, a museum exhibition has been set up to meet the curiosity of tourists.

 

Produced by the services of the Natural History Museum, this exhibition traces the lives of prehistoric men who populated the Ardèche gorges  about 35,000 years ago, when his works were drawn on the cave walls.
You can discover reproductions, photographs and a film made by the inventors. 

Vallon Pont d'Arc is a must for exploring the magnificent landscapes of this beautiful region.


The nature reserve des Ardèche gorges  was created in 1980 to preserve this exceptional site.

 

From Pont d'Arc to St Martin d'Ardeche, the river has dug a deep canyon that can be followed by car by the panoramic road overlooking the winding gorges and its cliffs.

You will find in son tourist Office  all the information concerning the proposed activities, walking tours, climbing, caving, swimming,  descent of the Ardèche by canoe kayak, museums and caves to visit, but also cabaret, discos, bowling, mini golf, course in the trees, etc...

It is a very lively village, especially in summer, with many shops in its center, restaurants  and cafes with terraces, as well as its Friday morning and Tuesday night markets, which are very successful.
